After SCD for 60 Years– Conversations with Judy Herod
Recently, I had a chance to have conversations with Judy Herod, Elaine Gottschall’s daughter, whose names have been written in the history of SCD. In 1955, Judy was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and conventional treatment did not help. Luckily, Elaine and Judy met Dr. Haas and started SCD in 1958. After 60 years, we are very curious about how Judy has recovered in full and how she is doing nowadays. With permission from Judy, I would like to share some of the conversations that may be of deep interest to you.
Q: How sick you were before you met SCD?
A: I was very, very sick – all of the time. I couldn’t go to school. I was just a little girl, having got sick the summer after first grade. I spent those early years going to doctor after doctor, on medication, hospitalized, trying diet after diet until my mother found Dr. Haas.
Q: Did you have any flare up after you started SCD? How is your overall health over these years?
A: I had a serious setback [within] less than two years after going on the diet – that was in Grade 6, and I had to eliminate a lot of the raw fruits and vegetables I was doing so well with. However, once I recovered from that, I never had further problems ….to this day! This was my experience, and everyone is different. We hope people will find health through the SCD and be able to eliminate their symptoms, but I don’t tell people to expect to be cured.
Q: How many years were you strictly on the SCD? How does it shape your food choice?
A: I was very fortunate and was actually cured by the SCD – although ulcerative colitis is considered an incurable disease, so I have met doctors who do not accept the word cure. Nevertheless, I remained strictly (this is to be taken literally) on the diet for 15 years. Eating this way became a way of life, my lifestyle, which I loved. I love the SCD food so this is how I choose to eat. I eat a nut flour scone full of apples and raisins for breakfast or SCD yogurt and fruit; salad for lunch, etc. I can eat illegal foods when I go out for dinner without becoming ill, however, this is not my choice. I never eat junk food, rarely eat out, never eat pre-manufactured foods by choice. I cannot imagine a single reason why I would eat other than I do. And I really, really love food!
Q: Who is responsible for the book and BTVC website?
A: I do. My mother died in 2005 and my husband and I run Kirkton Press to ensure the book remains in print. We do it to honor and continue her legacy because so many people continue to be helped by the book. We do it for them. Since 1987 when Food and the Gut Reaction was first published, the book has never been out of print. My mother continually updated subsequent editions with her ongoing research, and now I make sure that all references in the book remain current, even though I cannot update the science.
Q: Would your mother be pleased seeing worldwide awareness in SCD?
A: My mom was never satisfied, so I really can’t speak for her. It was never enough. I often think she would be thrilled to see some of the mainstream doctors accepting and using the SCD, however, the diet still just lives on the margins of the medical establishment, so – after all of these years – she might still be madder than hell. It was her rage that fueled her passion that led to countless lives being saved, including mine.
